Pakistan: Murderous thugs kill pregnant woman outside courtroom

May 28, 2014

Farzana Parveen, who was three months pregnant, was killed before a crowd of onlookers in front of the high court of Lahore, police have reported.

Police official Naseem Butt said the 25-year-old had married Mohammad Iqbal, with whom she had been engaged for years against the will of her family.

Her father had filed an abduction case against her husband, which the couple was contesting, her lawyer Mustafa Kharal said.

Arranged marriages are considered normal among conservative Pakistanis, who view marriage for love as a transgression.

There are times when ‘an eye for an eye’ seems terribly appropriate.

Generally I agree, of course, but I think ‘equally despicable’ may be a bit strong. Christianity has been tamed by long exposure to science, and Buddhism doesn’t seem to provoke the same levels of violence as other religions for some reason. Hinduism is largely practiced in a single homogenous state, otherwise I suspect its peculiarities would be prompting more violence than they currently are. But in current history, Islam surely gets the Oscar for motivating blind pointless mayhem.

‘Equally wrong’ — yes, of course. But wrong in significantly different ways.

  2. I have read about this incident already. It is a disgusting act of religious pompousness. Any religion that elevates its adherents to the level of taking lives of pregnant women is an evil enterprise. Any religion that elevates its adherents to the point of finding all other people/religious beliefs as beneath them is just as evil.

As a result I find all religions equally despicable. A glance at your other related headlines pretty much makes the case…
