Australia: Rabbi admits sex abuse at Melbourne Jewish school

April 12, 2013

VICTIMS say the admission of guilt by a former teacher at a Jewish Orthodox school accused of sexually abusing students is a watershed for Australia’s Jewish community.

David Kramer, 52, today pleaded guilty in the Melbourne Magistrates Court to five counts of indecent assault and one charge of an indecent act with a child under 16.

Today’s plea follows the American rabbi’s extradition from the United States last December.

The offences are all alleged to have occurred against four victims in the early 1990s, when Kramer was a teacher at Melbourne’s Yeshivah College.

Kramer, who has a US conviction for child sex abuse offences, is believed to be the first member of an Australian Jewish institution to plead guilty to child sex crimes.
