US: How stupid? THIS stupid!
…we’d be delighted if someone else decided to gouge their taxpayers to provide the subsidy. We get the renewable energy, the thing that we want, and pay less for it while having to gouge our own taxpayers less. This is a great deal for everyone. Unfortunately, that’s not how government works:
After lengthy investigations by multiple federal agencies, the United States is going to impose a tax ranging from 45 percent to 70 percent on all imported wind towers from China and Vietnam. Manufacturers in those countries are doing too good a job and it’s harming the U.S. wind tower industry.
These duties come on the heels of similar levies (18–250 percent) imposed on Chinese solar panels.
Yup. We hand over tax money to make these renewables cheaper. But if anyone starts making them cheaply then we tax them in order to stop them being cheap.
Yes, yes, I do realise that this is government here. But how darn stupid do you have to be to both subsidise and tax the same thing?
