Jordan: What constitutes ‘progress’ in Islamia?

June 14, 2011

Elected governments … eventually.

KING ABDULLAH of Jordan has become the first Middle Eastern leader to hand over substantial power voluntarily since the start of the ”Arab Spring”.

In a televised address on Sunday, the king, who has faced repeated demonstrations this year, announced the country would move to constitutional, elected government.

But the statement did not generate immediate excitement among pro-democracy campaigners in Jordan, largely because it failed to specify any timetable for the change.

Labib Kamhawi, a political analyst, said the speech was ”good on some points and weak on others”. He emphasised that the king had committed himself only to elected governments eventually.
