Al Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (Aqim) is holding seven French citizens hostage in the region and earlier threatened to kill them if French troops took part in military operations against them.
Gunmen shot dead a well-known comedian known for poking fun at Al-Qaeda linked Shebab insurgents in the Somali capital Mogadishu, officials and colleagues said Wednesday.
Abdi Jeylani Malaq Marshale, in his late thirties or early forties, was killed late Tuesday, minutes after leaving Kulmiye radio station, where he worked as drama producer and performer.
“Two men shot and seriously injured Marshale… the comedian was later pronounced dead,” said police lieutenant Mohamed Gaal, adding that “unfortunately the assailants escaped.”

The newly reopened National Theater in Mogadishu was the most potent sign of the peaceful change that has swept the Somali capital since Al Shabab militants fled the city in August.
It turned into a scene of bloody chaos Wednesday when a bombing killed 10 people. The attack apparently was aimed at assassinating Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohammed Ali, who was attending a ceremony with many officials of his Western-backed Transitional Federal Government, or TFG.
Two of the country’s top sports officials, Somali Olympic Committee President Aden Yabarow Wiish and Somali Football Federation chief Said Mohamed Nur, were killed in the blast.
Somalia’s warring parties have all failed to protect Somali children from the fighting or serving in their forces, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. The Islamist insurgent group al-Shabaab has increasingly targeted children for recruitment, forced marriage, and rape, and attacked teachers and schools, Human Rights Watch said.
Al-Qaeda’s presumed head in east Africa, Fazul Abdullah Muhammad, wanted for blowing up the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, has died in a shootout in the Somali capital, officials say.
Al-Shabab, a hard-line Islamic militia waging a campaign of terrorism across Somalia, has banned playing football in many areas it controls. The militia – linked to al-Qaeda – and Hezb-i-Islami, a rival extremist group, prohibited World Cup broadcasts, describing the sport as ”a satanic act” that corrupts Muslims.
The militants have brutally targeted politicians, clerics and peacekeepers – anyone who has challenged their extreme views.
In the past month, they have killed at least five people and arrested scores more for watching the Cup.

Two Somali football fans have been killed by Islamic militants after being caught watching World Cup matches.
The deaths happened on Saturday near the capital Mogadishu when members of the Hizbul Islam group stormed a house where people were watching Nigeria play Argentina.
A further 10 people were arrested by the group, which has imposed a strict version of Islam in the areas it controls in southern and central Somalia.
