Bangladesh: Muslim protesters burn Buddhist temples
A reason? Who needs a reason? Oh, that’s right — they were ‘offended’.
Hundreds of Muslims in Bangladesh burned at least four Buddhist temples and 15 homes of Buddhists on Sunday after complaining that a Buddhist man had insulted Islam, police and residents said.
Members of the Buddhist minority in the Cox’s Bazar area in the southeast of the country said unidentified people were bent on upsetting peaceful relations between Muslims and Buddhists.
Muslims took to the streets in the area late on Saturday to protest against what they said was a photograph posted on Facebook that insulted Islam.
The protesters said the picture had been posted by a Buddhist and they marched to Buddhist villages and set fire to temples and houses.
UK: Mentally disabled Muslim woman forced into marriage
A judge has said the forced marriage of a Muslim woman with learning difficulties should be annulled and condemned the “insulated” families who arrange them.
Mrs Justice Parker also criticised doctors and social workers for failing to raise the alarm when the woman was sent to Bangladesh to be married to a cousin, which allowed him to settle in England.
She said video of the wedding ceremony showed the bride was “almost comatose” and needed help to repeat vows she did not understand, while her relatives had made “false and misleading” statements about her condition.
And the judge brushed aside claims by the woman’s parents that having her marriage annulled would bring shame upon their family, in a case that was even considered at by the Government’s most senior lawyer, the Attorney General.
How could anything possibly be more shameful than forcing your mentally disabled daughter to ‘marry’ a stranger for money?
United Kingdom: Islamic bomb plot
Six people, including three living close to the Olympic site and a former police community support officer, have been arrested over a suspected terrorist plot.
The alleged plan involved Islamist extremists with potential targets in the UK, but was not linked to the Olympics, it is understood.
Bangladesh: Some good news – governments can make a difference
Why do so few of my posts come from Bangladesh? This is why.
SMH.
[Bangladeshi] Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, launches the first set of war crimes trials in the Muslim world, to address the atrocities committed by Islamists during Bangladesh’s struggle for independence.
…
Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, Dipu Moni, told me she hoped the country could become a beacon of secular humanism in a region racked by religious extremism, ethnic conflict and Maoist insurgency. It could then be a model not just for south Asia, but for the Muslim world.Unlike Pakistan, language and not religion is the organising principle of Bangladesh, but Islamists have hijacked much of its history. In 1979, the same year as the Iranian revolution, they took control of the state, amended the constitution, and created an Islamic republic.
The government of the centre-left Awami League Party has spared almost no expense to expunge the traces of hardline Islam since its election in 2008. It has spent millions to rename public buildings that once honoured hardline Islamists, and rewritten laws to protect women from having to wear Islamic head coverings. The government has granted itself the means to dismantle Islamist militant networks. Through the Supreme Court, Hasina nullified the 1979 amendment, making the world’s third-largest Muslim nation a secular republic again.
Bangladesh: Down with equality! Strike for your right to oppress!
[Dozens were injured when] the hardline Islami Oikyo Jote, a coalition of Islamic groups, enforced a nationwide general strike on Monday, demanding the government institute Islamic law and scrap policies aimed at giving women greater rights to property, employment and education.
I don’t see many women among the protestors. Funny, that.
Bangladesh: Islamic cleric held after teenage girl whipped to death
Police arrested four people including a Muslim cleric today after a teenage girl, who was accused of having an extra-marital affair with her cousin, was whipped to death.
Fifteen-year-old Hena Begum died in hospital on Monday after a village court in the southern Bangladesh district of Shariatpur sentenced her to 100 lashes, said local police chief A.K.M Shahidur Rahman.
Bangladesh: rapist pardoned, rape victim gets 101 lashes
A young girl in Bangladesh has been sentenced to 101 lashes for having become pregnant as a consequence of being raped. Her father will also have to pay a fine to the local Islamic savages who presided over the case. The rapist was pardoned by the village elders. The girl, who married shortly after the attack, has since been divorced in the usual peremptory Islamic manner.
Yes, yes, I know; the point of journalism is to tell you things you didn’t know or might not have guessed, on the man-bites-dog principle. If that principle were to be applied here, the rapist would have got 20 years in prison and the victim afforded compensation and counselling. You read the words ‘Islam’ and ‘Bangladesh’ and ‘rape’ and you knew exactly what was coming. Savagery and misogyny and a reversal of what we might call natural fairness. The girl was 16 years old and she said ‘all I want is justice.’
Bangladesh: Woman dies after Sharia caning
Two people have been arrested after the death of a Bangladeshi woman who was publicly caned for allegedly having an affair with her stepson, police say.
A group of village elders and clerics sentenced Sufia Begum under Sharia law to 40 lashes for adultery.
The 40-year-old died of her injuries almost a month after the beating in Rajshahi district, her family says.
Bangladesh banned such punishments in the name of religious edicts or fatwas by Muslim clergy earlier this year.
Only two? Why not arrest the whole damn village?

Bangladesh: Labourer beheaded to redden bricks
SMH.
“They said the owners were unhappy as the brick-field was not producing reddish bricks despite enough heating. A fortune teller then suggested that the brick-field needed a human sacrifice…”
This is just a wild way-out suggestion from left field, but did anyone ever think of testing the bricks? You know, with science?
