The Crown, led by attorney Gregory Smith, asked that Grecco serve between 21/2 to four years in a federal prison, while defence lawyer Brian Donnelly said a conditional sentence with strict restrictions would be enough punishment for his client heading into Monday’s sentencing.

In delivering the sentence at the John Sopinka Courthouse in Hamilton Monday morning, Hawke said Grecco’s crimes were breaches of trust and authority, and were premeditated.

Sudan: Sharia law flogging seen on YouTube

The Guardian.

Sudan’s judiciary has launched an investigation into the public flogging of a woman after footage of her being whipped by laughing policemen was posted to the internet.

The YouTube video shows an unidentified woman in a long black dress and a headscarf being ordered to sit down in a parking lot (Warning: Video contains graphic images of violence some may find disturbing).

A uniformed policeman proceeds to whip her all over her body as she screams in pain. A second officer laughs when he realises he is being filmed, before joining in the punishment, which lasts a minute and a half.

Religion hurts. We know that now because it’s on YouTube. Who would have thought it?

Nigeria: Christian thugs lose court case

Butterflies and Wheels.

Today a Federal High Court in Calabar in Cross River State, presided over by Justice P.J. Nneke, dismissed the application by Helen Ukpabio and some members of the Liberty Gospel Church seeking to enforce their fundamental rights against Akwa Ibom state government…and others… for daring to organize a workshop which they perceived to be critical of their activities…

The court dismissed the application and awarded costs of 20,000 naira(184 dollars) against Helen and her church members.

…last year over 150 thugs from Helen Ukpabio’s Liberty Gospel Church invaded the venue of a workshop on Witchcraft and Child Rights in Calabar. They attacked and beat up the organizers of the program. The police intervened and arrested some of them; in their statement they said they were sent by Helen Ukpabio to disrupt the event.

“This is a landmark judgment and a victory of the rule of law over the law of the jungle…”

Amen to that.

Vatican: Vatican Bank accused of money laundering

Yahoo! News.

[T]he Institute for Religious Works is a bank, and it’s under harsh new scrutiny in a case involving money-laundering allegations that led police to seize euro23 million ($30 million) in Vatican assets in September. Critics say the case shows that the “Vatican Bank” has never shed its penchant for secrecy and scandal.

The Vatican calls the seizure of assets a “misunderstanding” and expresses optimism it will be quickly cleared up. But court documents show that prosecutors say the Vatican Bank deliberately flouted anti-laundering laws “with the aim of hiding the ownership, destination and origin of the capital.” The documents also reveal investigators’ suspicions that clergy may have acted as fronts for corrupt businessmen and Mafia.

The Vatican and the Mafia! It’s like having Fu Manchu and Dr. Evil in the same story!
